#19: Odwa Zamane (FRM)
Our editor drops in with a fresh batch of recs, including Netflix art anime 'Blue Period', Frances Ha (2012), the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and more.
As fashion week season slowly withers away – we approach 20 newsletters. So I just want to take the opportunity to thank everyone who has been supporting The FRM Newsletter. And for those of you who are new – welcome :)
The FRM Newsletter is a fashion-based newsletter which invites trendy local creative personalities to – as Andy Warhol would put it – relish within their “15-minutes of fame” by sharing their personal fashion, music, art, film, books, food, travel & lifestyle recommendations with our audience.
Frequently, different personalities within our creative industry are profiled and asked to share their personal recs – in order for the newsletter to serve as a continuous extension of good taste.
So without further ado, let me jump back in & share what I’ve been into recently!
💙🎨 Blue Period (2021) on Netflix
Based on a Japanese Manga, Blue Period (2021) is a TV show which is centred around the life of popular high schooler Yatora Yaguchi, who gets bored with life and jumps into the beautiful yet unrelenting world of art after finding inspiration in a painting. I’d recommend this show to anyone who’s in need of a jolt of creative inspiration – or even just interested in the inner-workings of the art world.
🅱️🧛🏽♀️ Balenciaga SS23 by Demna Gvasalia
Largely referred to as ‘The Mud Show’ and opened by the contraversial Ye – the show was hosted inside a mud-drenched runway designed by Spanish artist, Santiago Sierra. The collection consisted of Call of Duty-esque garments, armour & regalia, accompanied by insane sunglass & accessory silhouettes, clutch bags as Lays chip packets, and so much more!
🌈🎸 Yeah Yeah Yeahs — It’s Blitz! (2009)
First of all – God Save Indie Sleaze. This early 2000s music era brings about so much nostalgia for me and one of the important cult bands which formed a part of this iconic music era were the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. My favourite songs from ‘It’s Blitz’ are ‘Heads Will Roll’, ‘Soft Shock’ and ‘Zero’.
🎥🗽 Frances Ha (2012) directed by Noah Baumbach
I keep rewatching this movie because it so closely resembles my life! Written by the legendary Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach, this film follows a New York woman who apprentices for a dance company and throws herself headlong into her dreams – even as the possibility of realizing them dwindles.
💄👩💻 STYLE NOT COM
The new Gossip Girl of the Fashion Industry. I love everything about this page – so informative & refreshing. This IG page has been such a vital insider-information source throughout the fashion week season.
🪐📺 Entergalactic (2022) on Netflix
From the mind of Kid Cudi, including the voices of the likes of Timotheé Chalamet, Vanessa Hudgens & Ty Dolla $ign, Entergalactic is an animated TV movie loosely based on Kid Cudi’s life. The storyline follows a gifted artist, Jabari, who tries to balance success and love when he moves into his dream apartment and falls for his neighbour. Absolutely loved it!
👨🎤🎵 The Clash
Probably the coolest English punk band during the 70s and 80s original British punk wave. If you’ve never listened to them before – I’d suggest you start with their Apple Music (or Spotify) Essentials. Personally, I also get a lot of style & fashion inspiration from The Clash.
📕👠 The Chiffon Trenches by Andre Leon Talley
I enjoyed this book so much that I wrote a review on it for the Newsletter! Check it out here ;)
💥🎸 The Velvet Goldmine (1998) directed by Todd Haynes
I’ve seen this film a few times now and I find it so beautiful how it explains the birth of Glam Rock through lead character Brian Slade – who is basically playing a version of David Bowie. “In 1984, British journalist Arthur Stuart investigates the career of 1970s glam superstar Brian Slade, who was heavily influenced in his early years by hard-living and rebellious American singer Curt Wild.”
!!! Frances Ha - soooo goood
