#95: Jaimi Robin
We're joined by Cape Town-based multi-hyphenate creative, Jaimi Robin, who tells us more about Alejandro Cartagena's photography, Vince Staples music, 'The Te of Piglet', nutritional blocks, and more.
Jaimi Robin is a multi-hyphenate creative from Cape Town, South Africa. She's obsessed with a good hike, a good laugh, and a good show. Her work—much like herself—is in a constant state of flux, and slow but steady growth, toward a more creatively holistic future. With a background rooted in fashion, brand storytelling, and the internet culture that raised her, she’s currently working as a photographer and art director—both in-house at a creative consultancy and conceptually freelance. She loves a good 5–9; there’s nothing like an after-hours concept deck for the soul. It’s like a reward.
She loves crafting a story. Photography was how Jaimi learned to speak, to share, and as she’s finding her voice and growing as an artist, she is equally drawn to more narrative-led work. Right now, Jaimi is focused on building a strong foundation for a future in direction, ideation, and storytelling. Creating from a place of curiosity and imagination is as thrilling as it is exhausting, but creative work fulfils in ways nothing else ever could. Combining all her skills, experience, and talents to craft more holistically is honestly the dream—daunting, but worth it. She definitely wants to move into crafting more long-lasting physical objects in the near future—designing something that exists beyond a screen or campaign. That’s well on the cards.
Side note: Jaimi is also fluent in brain-rot media, so do expect many a TikTok reference.
We welcome her to The FRM Newsletter to share what she’s been into recently!
👖👞 Fashion
Fashion’s been in a bit of a lull for a while now, but the cartoon character in me is living for my wardrobe choices.
Same staples, different day:
Baggy formal pants (barrel, balloon, parachute? As long as I’m drowning, they're winning)
Oversized shirts
Dark-wash denim jackets
A good sneaky or mule
If this piques your interest and you’re looking to be inspired:
Nanamica NY
Jil Sander AW94
Are they in the budget? No. Are they in the vision? Obviously.
We’re striving for something, people. Formless for 2025.
🎸 Music
How I score my every day? A little bit of everything—but right now, I’m shimmying the shoulders to:
Ravyn Lenae — Satellites ft. Vince Staples
Vince Staples — Norf Norf
Remi Wolf — Valerie (Like a Version cover)
Nkosi’s Fantasia — Mika Ikhifa, Nubalix
Makoto — Four Silver Rings
FKA Twigs — Perfect Stranger
Bongeziwe Mabandla — Hlala
🎨🎭 Art
Artists I love at the moment (and forever) are all photographers in the documentary space who let me peek into worlds outside of my own. I’m obsessed with images that tell entire stories.
Nikki McClarron
Alejandro Cartagena
Miguel Rio Branco
Other artists I’m floored by currently are all in the space I hope to grow into one day—or one day later: industrial lamp designers. There’s something about shaping light in a tangible and functional way that really speaks to me. Something beyond the standard Key and Fill.
Mario Tsai Studio
Clay and Rory of Will it Lamp
🎬 Film
Coming-of-age indie films always hit the spot.
Whip It – for obvious reasons. Elliot Page can do no wrong.
Short Term 12 – a gut punch. Keith Stanfield can also do no wrong.
Sucker Punch, Sweeney Todd, and A Series of Unfortunate Events – for nostalgic purposes.
📚🌍 Books
The Te of Piglet — Taoism for 5-year-olds? That’s my bible. It’s nostalgic, soft, and honest. It reminds you not to tap out of your childlike wonder. Stay soft in a world that demands hardness from you. There’s never harm in being who you are—and letting what aligns find you, and what doesn’t simply wash off.
@eatingpopoz — Not a book, but my favourite Substack. Captures being a bit of a mess in the best way. Hilarious and deeply lived. One day my own Substack will be this level of unapologetic.
Atmos Magazine — Beautifully crafted climate activism. Top 2 and not 2.
🥗🍣 Food
I’m a simple girl—protein and veg three times a day. Chicken salad? Little fish, little broccoli? Yes, please.
I think I’ve been an advocate for nutritional blocks for the longest time—you know the ones from the Snowpiercer train movie? Definitely less roach, but let’s get into some yummy blocks that never need to be cooked and don’t amass a pile of dishes. I’m there. That’s my train take for those who celebrate.
Other than my musings on laziness in nutrition, I do go hard for a dessert. I’ve been obsessed with the viral tiramisu brownies since Christmas last year. Try them. Might just change your life.
🇯🇵🚋 Travel & Lifestyle
Currently planning my first solo trip to Japan. My advice:
Get an agent, or
Get really f*cking good at Excel.
Command + K your way to glory. Hyperlink that hotel, bapes. The map too.
