#94: Skye (Studio Majik)
We're joined by visual artist, Skye of 'Studio Majik', who tells us more about iced matcha, Frank Ocean's discography, styling oversized jorts this season! Sanrio cartoon characters, and more.
Skye Majik is a South African visual artist born and raised in Cape Town, passionate about: 1. Sharing mental health awareness to our youth and elders, 2. creating a safe and inclusive space for the LGBTQIA+ community and reflecting that in their work, 3. as well as visually representing the binary nature of life that is self-evident in everyday discourse, by the contrasts between the intricate “majikal” energy of life and the reality of death, living and inanimate, experienced in our daily lives.
We welcome Skye to The FRM Newsletter to share what they’ve been into recently!
👖💄 Fashion & Self-Expression
As a child, I was always my own stylist—cutting up t-shirts, tie-dying, rocking my dad’s Vans shirts, and layering mini skirts over jeans. I dreamed of being a fashion designer and filled countless files with characters and their unique outfits, all born from my sense of play. Even at 25, that playful spirit hasn’t faded. Every morning, I open my wardrobe and the fun begins. Lately, it’s either oversized jorts paired with a black tee, silver jewellery, a swipe of blush, and my beloved broke cap, or a hardshell jacket with a long black skirt and graphic eyeliner. To me, comfort equals confidence, and if I’m not comfortable, what’s the point? (Unless it’s a formal event—then, platform shoes it is, no matter how uncomfortable!)
👼🖼 Art
I’m an artist and creative designer based in Cape Town, South Africa, fuelled by the energy of human connection, reflection, and passion. My work is inspired by the raw, unfiltered perspective of a child—a mindset that encourages creation through play rather than a strict start-to-finish process. As an illustrator, graphic designer, and occasional photo shoot collaborator, I blend detail with abstraction to create striking, purposeful visuals. The ‘Majik’ in Skye Majik represents that transformative power of play, energy, and creativity—pushing boundaries until art speaks with clarity, impact, and purpose.
🎷🎧 Music
I find music infinitely more captivating than most voices. While I enjoy people, there’s something about the melody of heartbreak, the sensuality of jazz, or the raw power of classic emo bands that pulls me in. What’s even more intriguing is discovering what my friends are listening to and how our musical tastes sometimes intersect. And, fair warning: if you say you don’t like Frank Ocean, I’ll just put my headphones on and walk away. Blonde and Channel Orange 5eva!
☕️🥐 Food
Being a true Cape Town girly, I’m absolutely weak for an iced matcha, a heavenly fresh shawarma, and—let’s be honest—a perfectly baked almond croissant.
🎬 Film
Film is a lifelong love affair. As a kid, I mixed it up with the likes of Pride & Prejudice, The Sword in the Stone, and even Bratz. Today, my all-time faves include Ladybird, Mid90s, and the timeless Perks of Being a Wallflower (Tumblr girl forever). When it comes to series, I can’t get enough of Top Boy, The Penguin, and The Bear. I have an obsession with Hello Kitty and the Sanrio characters especially the cartoons. :3
📚 Books
I often find it hard to sit still long enough for a book (ADHD do sho ;)) but when I do, I’m drawn to themes of spirituality, philosophy, or the delightful world of well illustrated children’s books.
🌊⚖️ Travel & Lifestyle
Lately, I’m all about creating schedules and setting goals to keep myself on track. Journaling and inner reflection are my go-to methods for maintaining balance. For me, life is about striving to be the purest version of myself, using self-awareness to support those around me who are on their own journeys.
