#84: Nandi K
We're joined by film student, Nandi K, who tells us more about Iron Claw (2023), local musicians 12 Dogs & SC23, chicken tikka, FRNDLY clothing brand, and much more!
Nandi K is a film student with big dreams, born & raised between the vibrant cities of Johannesburg & Pretoria. When they’re not immersed in the world of visual arts such as photography & design, they’re a devoted cat mom to gorgeous feline, Zora. Whether it’s piecing together a good playlist, a solid fit or creating eye-catching graphics, they thrive on creativity & the magic of bringing ideas to life.
We welcome Nandi K to The FRM Newsletter to share what they’ve been into recently!
🧥🇿🇦 fashion
I definitely get my sense of style from my mother who’s big on thrifting, & I picked up the habit early. There’s something exciting about the hunt, never knowing what you’ll find but always walking away with a piece that feels like it has a story. Clothes with history hit different.
Locally, I’ve been loving FRNDLY. The brands has such a unique approach—clothing that feels like more than just fabric & how there’s a focus on celebrating South African identity, which I think is super cool.
Getting dressed up & putting together an outfit can be so much fun. I love challenging myself to create a look, even when it seems impossible. I think it’s because I genuinely enjoy the process & have an eye for spotting what pieces can work together in unexpected ways. I think everyone should play dress up in there room while blasting some babyxsosa every now & then, it is quite therapeutic.
🎧 music
I absolutely love music! Music is my lifeline. I’m basically always in my headphones.
I grew up with one of my older brother who’s actually a producer & had always put me onto underground music from young & because of that my taste is all over the place. One artist that shaped my love for music is Kilo Kish—her “Homeschool” EP will forever be a core memory for me (again, shout out to my older brother).
On the local scene, 12 Dogs & SC23 are artists to keep an eye on. They’re bringing something fresh to South African music, & I love seeing that. Lately, I’ve also been deep into gqom—nothing gets me moving like a good Que DJ, Omagoqa, or Lelowhatsgood set.

🎨 art
I’ve never really been someone who’s big on visual art although I am interested in getting into into it & learning about it more. I do have many friends like Lulu Madolo & Fady Tarawneh, who are artists who’s work is definitely worth the mention though.
🎬 films
As a film student, I’m obsessed with good color grading, & A24 never disappoints in that department. My all-time favorite? Iron Claw. For inspiration, I always go back to Jeen-yuhs, the Kanye West documentary—it’s such a raw look at ambition & creativity. I really enjoy documentaries & watch them often. While they might not be for everyone, I think this one is something anyone can enjoy & engage with. It’s also fascinating to see the artist story behind their work. & for comfort? Kill Bill. Both volumes. The Bride is just too iconic. #CertifiedClassics!
🍛 food
My friends have an obsession with Indian food—specifically chicken tikka—& they’ve got me hooked. There’s a spot in Norwood that serves the best chicken tikka & mutton kebabs, so that’s been a regular thing. Funny enough, I don’t usually do spicy food, but something about this combo just hits right.
🕺 lifestyle
I think it’s really important to go out, meet new people & really live, love, laugh & just have fucking fun lmao. If there’s a dance floor, good music, & drinks, I’m there. But if there’s a gqom set? It’s not even a question—I’m going.
There’s something so special about the joburg night life scenery & just how inclusive it’s been lately. It’s beautiful to see so many different people—no matter who you are or where you’re from—come together to enjoy themselves, connect over common interests, or just dance & feel like they fit in. There’s always a spot for someone so I think it’s important for people to explore different scenes.
✈️ travel
I haven’t traveled as much as some people, but I’ve had my fair share of experiences. About three years ago, I was lucky enough to visit Japan, & it’s a trip I’ll always be grateful for. It’s fascinating to see how people in different places live, navigate life, & how cultures vary. If you ever get the chance to travel, I think it’s something worth doing as much as possible—it opens you up to new experiences & gives you a fresh perspective on the world.
🧘♀️ tips
I find that it’s important to have a good support system. I’ve learned to insert myself into spaces where I share interests with others because it’s easier to find inspiration & guidance—especially as someone who tends to doubt myself & procrastinate, particularly when it comes to my own work. These spaces & people are what truly remind me not to give up & that there is a place & purpose for me in this world.
