#76: Tshepiso M (S.EISLEN)
We're joined by fashion designer & stylist, Tshepiso M of 'S.EISLEN', who tells us more about Zanele Muholi's art, saying No to things, Bianca Saunders, Roma (2018), and so much more!
“I am an experienced freelance fashion stylist and founder and designer a menswear brand called S.EISLEN, I have a deep passion for art, fashion and architecture. I draw inspiration from local and international designers, music, culture and beautiful things. I’m a lover at heart and I ambitious woman, who wishes to play the cello like Kelsey Lu (anyone offering lessons?). I sometimes draw in my spare time (rarely happens these days) or take long walks in nature. I’d describe my design aesthetic as very detail orientated. I love bold architectural silhouettes, well-tailored designs and muted colourways. I’m still at the very early stages of my brand/career but I hope overtime I’ll be able to show more of my talents and designs. You can find some of my work on my brand page/personal page, also on the Top 20 SAFW 2024 student comp post.”
We welcome Tshepiso M to The FRM Newsletter to share what they’ve been into recently!
👖🕴 Fashion
Designers & Stylists, I’m loving right now are Peter Do, Bianca Saunders (she’s the blueprint), June Ambrose, Michael Osborne and Dao-Yi Chow and Jerry Lorenzo for FEAR OF GOD.
🎺💿 Music
This is a hard one, but artists I constantly go back to are Sade, Aolani, Goya Gumbani, Navy Blue, Nick Hakim, Erykah Badu, Lauryn Hill, Jordan Rakei, Yussef Dayes and many more.
🎨👩🎨 Art
One artist that has my attention right now is Zanele Muholi, and Cristina Martinez. They’re nothing alike in art aesthetic but both produce beautiful work.
🎬📽 Film/movies
My favourite movies are Public Enemies, Eat Love Pray, Roma, Rebecca, Sergio, Tarzan...yes, I said Tarzan, Princess and the Frog, Queen and Slim, If Beale Street Could Talk. This two aren’t movies but was too good not to mention, Cigarette Girl and A Different World. Lastly Man on fire (anything Denzel Washington really) and Shall We Dance.
⛪🧾 Books
I haven’t been reading too much lately, but one book I can’t live without is my bible.
🍫💕 Food
Anything chocolate!
🎌🗽 Travel
I haven’t travelled outside the country yet, but I’d love to visit NYC and Japan (for the fashion obviously), Rio de Janeiro and Jamaica.
🚫🤟 Lifestyle tip
“No is a full sentence”; I know most of us have heard this before but investing in yourself is the best thing to do. I had to say no to things that weren’t helping me achieve my dreams and goals. Learning to put yourself first has helped me be where I’m at career wise and with the confidence in my skills.
Be yourself, those who like/love you will stay. The rest don’t matter.
Trust your gut! It’s always right!
Slow down. Things of real value need time and attention. So don’t rush, don’t jump to conclusions. Be patience and all will fall into place in the right place and time.
