#66: FRM editors recs
Our editor, Odwa Zamane, returns with some enticing FRM recs including The City (2008), Mecca Mind's new 'Fruit Snax' album, high-end vintage store Afraid of Mice, Rats at the jol on IG, and more!
Hi everyone! It feels like it’s been ages since I last checked in with some editors recs, so hopefully its a goodie. I just want to extend a big thank you to everyone who’s been showing love to the newsletter–and to all of our newbies, welcome.
The FRM Newsletter is a fashion-based newsletter which invites trendy creative personalities to–as Andy Warhol would say–relish within their “15-minutes of fame” by sharing personal fashion 💄 art 🎨 film 🎬 music 🎧 travel & lifestyle 🧳 recommendations with our audience! You can now also access the FRONT ROW MEDIA Podcast episodes exclusively through Substack.
So without further ado, here’s a snapshot of what’s been occupying my brain over the past few months & what I’ve been into recently.
💄🍸 The City (2008 – 2010)
So by now you should know that I am an avid 2000s Hollywood television series watcher and ‘The City’ falls well within this bracket. I’ve naturally progressed from The O.C., to Laguna Beach, The Hills, and now The City. The television series follows Whitney Port from ‘The Hills’ (2006) as she leaves California for New York City to work as an image coordinator for the design house of Diane Von Furstenberg. I’ve always had an admiration for PR legend, Kelly Cutrone of NYC’s enigmatic PR agency ‘People’s Revolution’, so I also enjoy this series because she features quite frequently, more as a mentor for the protagonist Whitney.
🐀😂 Rats at the jol
My favourite Instagram account right now–without a question. The universe of memes & shitposting was never ready for this. If you’re reading this Rats at the jol admin, I love you! Never change.

🗡🎌 Bleach (2004)
Produced by Studio Pierrot, the same anime production company which created Naruto, ‘Bleach’ is a Japanese anime television series based on adventures of Ichigo Kurosaki after he obtains the powers of a Soul Reaper. Bleach lasted from October 2004 to March 2012, spanning 366 episodes. The biggest highlight for me is Bleach’s graphics and visual characterisations; very fashion-forward and visually stimulating.
I am just inlove with MGNA Crrrta. Like everything. From their sound, visuals, graphics and even their merch! An apt example of the raw energy emanating within the New York downtown scene right now. My favourite music videos of theirs are RIGHT, JFK-LAX & UM4HUM4H4Y3.
🚇🎤 Subway takes
Another really good Instagram account. Done by comedian Kareem Rahma a 37-year old New York Bedford-Stuyvesant local, he allows notable New Yorkers, friends and acquaintances an opportunity to sound off their hottest takes about random facts about the city, whilst on the subway. My favourite was Episode 104: The Candid Girlfriend. “All guys think that they wanna date the cool, hot, artsy, baddie girl with like baby bangs and a bad father but that’s actually not the case at all. What all guys in New York want to date is the “candid girlfriend. The Candid Girlfriend is the patient zero of the ‘The Pick-Me-Girl.’”
Finished this book a few months ago and it was an exceptional read. First published in 2006, this book provides a behind-the-scenes tour of the cutthroat side of the fashion industry. Written by Imogen Edwards-Jones and co-authored by an anonymous A-list British designer, the book focuses around the Fashion Week activities of London, Paris, and New York, in a controversial account that discusses the high-stakes processes contributing to every stage.
Nestled on Harrington Street in Cape Town, I personally feel like Afraid of Mice is the hottest high-end vintage store right now. I have promised myself that my first Balenciaga City Bag & Chloé Paddington Bag will be purchased from this fine establishment.
