#51: Tsele Nthane (Melanateyourmood)
This week we are joined by fashion photographer, Tsele Nthane a.k.a. 'Melanateyourmood', who tells us more about Club Kloof’s New York Sour, tassel loafers, Summertime in Paris! and more.
Tsele is curios about life, loves red wine, cheesecake, and hopes to one day have a chat with Moriyama and Araki.
They’re a phenomenal photographer whose work warranted my attention a few years ago. Over the past year, they’ve been travelling the world shooting streetstyle & backstage at different fashion weeks, such as Paris or Milan Fashion Week, for luxury brands like Wales Bonner, Prada and more.
We welcome Tsele to The FRM Newsletter to share what they’ve been into recently.
🧥👞 Personal fashion
I’m at high-waisted wide and extreme wide-leg pants lately, with t-shirts with a vintage fit. I just found a used hip flask on the Internet and I’m going to say it’s from Victorian England. So I think I’m leaning heavy into 70’s fits this season. I need to find tassel loafers with a bit of a platform. I’m using this dense hair to experiment with some interesting styles.
📽🔫 Movies
They don’t make many Westerns anymore but some of the new ones are a good watch. ‘Yellowstone' (2018) with Kevin Costner, 'The English' (2022) was quite good, and going back to the 'Magnificent Seven’ (2016) with Denzel. I love that cheap exaggerated tension when the saloon doors open and everything goes quiet, someone cocks a gun, another spits on the ground, the card game stops, and someone hurriedly exits through the back doors. I watched ‘Oppenheimer’ (2023) recently and really loved Nolan’s character study–I thought it was going to be about the bomb but it really is about his messy life. 10/10 recommend.
🍸🍳 Food
I’ve got to put you on to this–Harrington’s has this R300 special every Wednesday with a 5-course wine tasting & gourmet food. Seriously, seriously, I don’t say this lightly. You MUST GO! Honeybun in Obs is back and their all-day breakfasts are really good. Club Kloof’s New York Sour and a Shiraz any time!
🥐🌎 Travel
So much Paris slander on the timeline but I loved their summer and I’d skip Milan fr. I need Moz, Angola, Ivory Coast, Senegal and the spirit of Popi.
📸📚 Books
I keep going back to Jerry Saltz’s ‘How to be an Artist’. I’ve fallen out of love with some of my favourite photobooks.
“If photography couldn’t save her what hope do we have”’- Meyerowtiz on Arbus.
