🪩 Music, DJing, ‘Ankle Injuries’
Music is and has always been my first love. I feel so lucky to be able to share the music that I find interesting to other people through DJing. I have a bi-weekly residency on local heroes Lilies Radio with a show called ‘Ankle Injuries’, where I can showcase my selections of left, right and everything in-between the fields of house, electronic, disco and more. I also include some guests on the show to share their taste in music so if you’re looking for something new to listen to, go check out @wearelilies. There’s also a ton of other local creators to look at too! Also, if you identify as queer or a woman, and want to learn how to DJ, I would recommend applying for the P_ssy Party Academy. The P_ssy Party mentors taught me a lot about DJing and it was a warm and encouraging experience. More women and queer DJs please!!
👒 Ribbons and Hats
One of my new favourite trends are ribbons. Tie them in your hair, pin them on your clothes, wear it as a choker or tie them on your shoes. Ribbons can be seen as hyper feminine but I love to wear them with outfits that I consider to be not so feminine.
Another thing that I’m loving at the moment are hats, whether it’s a beret, a bucket hat, a cap or a beanie, just anything you can put on your head. I know a few people that think hats won’t suit them but, like a lot of things, it might take some getting used to. Next time you’re thrifting or shopping, go try on a hat.
🌮 Food
New favourite spot at the moment for some good food is Fireworks Tacos in Parkmore. I really enjoyed the Birria Tacos.
🎬 For the Film Lovers
If you love film and don’t already have it, get the app Letterboxd. An easy way to track films you’ve watched, save those you want to watch and share good films with friends. It’s a great way to find something new to watch! Some of my film recommendations are: The Fall (2006), I Origins (2014) Captain Fantastic (2016), and Suspiria (2018). A new series that came out recently that I’m looking forward to watching is I’m a Virgo (2023).
🫂 Authenticity and Community
I have a strong interest in people, it’s amazing to see how everyone has their own thing going on and making their mark in their own way. I think it’s important to be authentic and genuine when you’re interacting with others. Being yourself around someone means that that person can feel more comfortable to be themselves around you. Supporting and uplifting others is a great way to build a sense of community and I think we need to support each other more in the local scene. Don’t be afraid to try new things, go to new places, look at new artists, experience new and different events. You will never know until you know ;)!
My last little tip for you is that we’re all here trying to navigate through life so why not be kind along the way. It’s nice to be cool but it’s way cooler to be nice!
