#43: Luhle Narvis (dollakitty)
This week we are joined by student, DJ (sometimes) and creative director, Luhle Narvis, who tells us more about books by Slavoj Zizek, Mowalola, ‘Four-Calender Cafe’ by Cocteau Twins, and more.
Luhle Narvis, also known as ‘dollakitty’, is a 22-year old student pursuing a BA majoring in English and Philosophy. They’re the founder of Straight Satan–a clothing brand, and they’re a DJ... sometimes. As well as a self-proclaimed Instagram comedian.
We welcome dollakitty to The FRM Newsletter to share what they’ve been into recently.
📚 Books
I’m trying hard to finish 12 books by the end of the year. Currently reading ‘Trouble in Paradise’ by Slavoj Zizek. He’s the Madonna of Communism I believe. My all-time favourite book is ‘My year of rest and relaxation’ by Ottessa Moshfegh; I’d say it sums up my whole 2021–dazed, confused and heavily medicated. Stay away from self-help books, they make you extremely delusional.
🎧🎶 Music
Can’t say this enough but the underground scene is the future. There’s a bunch of youngsters like the collective anxiety boys that are so tapped in. I’m trying to get people on this shit so I play some of their music during my dj sets. If, hypothetically, I could only listen to one album for the rest of my life–it would definitely be ‘Four-Calender Cafe’ by Cocteau Twins. Special mention goes to Babyxsosa of course, she’s my goat.
🎬 Films
I use Letterboxd to track all the films I’ve watched, or that are on my watchlist. My older brother was a director and I wanted to become a cinematographer, so I take movies very seriously. Top 5 favourite movies right now are: Tree of Life (2011), The Holy Mountain (1973), All About Lily Chou Chou (2001), Mandy (2018) and The Last Supper (1995). Obsessed with Larry Clark’s films although he’s a bit of a weirdo. Of course anything done by Harmony Korine is unmatched, my king. Alejandro Jodorowsky is one of the greatest directors of all time and he was extremely ahead of his time too.
🍜 Food
I grew up with a crunchy mom who got me into eating organic food and checking the ingredients of all food, so I’d say I’m very picky. Being vegetarian also made me extremely picky but you cannot go wrong with potatoes. Maybe I love potatoes or maybe that’s usually the only thing that most restaurants have that actually tastes good and is vegetarian. La Parada and The Royale have the best potato chips EVERR. I have phases where I get hyper-obsessed with one type of food and I just eat that until I can’t stomach it anymore. Right now I’m obsessed with falafel shawarmas from this place called Yalla.
🧵💋 Fashion
Contrary to what some people might think–I’m actually not satanic. I got the name from this book I was reading about Charles Manson and the CIA. He’s a really crazy dude. He was affiliated with this biker group called The Straight Satans. I read the book while I was in hospital and that name just stuck. I absolutely adore Vivienne Westwood. The destroy nazi christ muslin t-shirt she made is probably one of the reasons I leaned more to making controversial clothing in the first place; always question everything. There’s a bunch of stuff I’m working on for the brand–so keep your eye out hehe. Right now I’m really rocking with Mowalola, Frederic Saint-Parck, Chopova Lowena, Ottolinger and fuckthisindustry2008.
🖼 Art
Olaolu Slawn is Nigeria’s finest artist, 420indianabitch is my favourite photographer currently but I also really love Gabriel Moses. Petr Maverick is part of Motherlan, I really love his art too (@petrmaverick); another crazy photographer is Noah Dillon.
