This week we are joined by techno DJ & multidisciplinary artist, Claire Guilherme, who tells us more about the Arctic Monkeys, Korean cuisine during Winter, Sofia Coppola films, and more.
Claire Guilherme is a techno DJ, fashion enthusiast, mix media artist & journalism student, based in Johannesburg.
We welcome them to The FRM Newsletter to share what they’ve been into recently.
🎶🎸 Techno, classic rock, and alternative music
I listen to a lot of techno music throughout the day, but sometimes I like going back to my old roots, which are classic rock and a lot of alternative music (funny story: my dad used to listen to a lot of rock when I was growing up, and I totally hated it). But now I’m obsessed (shout out to him, lol) with artists like the Arctic Monkeys, The Kooks, The xx, Led Zeppelin, Sniff ‘n’ the Tears, Lana Del Rey, Dire Straits & a lot of Tame Impala.
🧥💋 Personal fashion
I’ve been really obsessed with penny lane coats and mixing & matching accessories (pearls, chokers, and rosaries). Think Madonna in the 80s. Harley-Davidson jackets I think everyone should own one; it literally goes with everything. I’ve owned one for 7 years now. Platform heels have also been my favorite lately because they are very chic. They make me taller.
🎬🎭 Films
I can go on for ages about films, as they're one of my sources of inspiration and help me escape reality. It’s where I get my fashion inspiration. My favorite directors are Sofia Coppola or Quentin Tarantino. Oh, I’m also currently obsessed with Mia Goth; she’s fucking talented (her female rage is absolutely everything). I think she’s our modern-day Shelley Duvall.
My must-sees are:
Clueless (1995)
Basic Instinct (1992)
Show Girls (1995)
Pulp Fiction (1994)
Pearl (2022)
Girl, Interrupted (1999)
🍛🧂 Food
Because of my Portuguese heritage, I stereotypically love my chicken and rice both as street food and on dates, but my boyfriend always suggests I explore different foods, and currently I’ve fallen in love with Korean cuisine, especially for the winter.
👾🎨 Art
My bedroom has always been my canvas. I grew up cutting pictures from Vogue’s magazine and creating collages. Through my studies, I’ve been able to digitalize them through a form of mixed media. My all-time favorite artists are:
Andy Warhol
Keith Haring
Marisol Escobar
Mr. Brainwash
