#39: Tamryn Seale (Tamsbaby)
This week we are joined by fashion stylist & multidisciplinary artist, Tamsbaby, who tells us more about her collective '77eightfive', Marley Coffee, thrift stores like V.declutter, and more!
Tamryn Seale, or better known as ‘Tamsbaby’, is a 20-year old multidisciplinary artist based in Cape Town, focusing more on fashion styling & creative directing but not limited to it. She has an Instagram page @styledbytams__ where she showcases all of her creative work — ranging from work with clients to various passion projects. As much as she sees herself as a stylist, she also sees herself as a storyteller — expressing her emotions and life stories through her creative work.
We welcome her to The FRM Newsletter to share what she’s been into recently.
🎶 Music
I love music; literally cannot express that enough. Ravyn Lenae, Steve Lacy and Bob Marley! I’m an alternative music & reggae lover. I don’t know what exactly they continuously add into their songs (must be crack) but ever since I’ve found them, I’ve been obsessed. Ravyn specifically has inspired me and plays a big role in my development as a young creative, and just overall person. Music means so much to me and Ravyn’s songs have somehow “saved me”. I found Ravyn at such a crucial point in my life and it literally very much changed who I was.
And when it comes to Local artists, I’d say Orish, Lookatups, Luukhanyo, Kila G, scintilla, Geezy and my recent favourite, MeccaMind.
💍👑 Jewellery
Earrings, a necklace or pearls and at least 3 rings. Jewellery elevates your entire outfit!! Invest in some local made pearls at least, and you’re good to go.
🌟 Moodboards
At first it was just something that needed to be done for photoshoots, but overtime, became something I enjoy and love. It’s the best way to express my visions. In my spare time, I’ll probably be on Pinterest — looking through fashion magazines etc., compiling a Pinterest board and then creating a moodboard.
I’m a thrift girl; I rarely ever purchase anything in retail stores. My outfits consist of almost only thrifted items!! Because why not be sustainable and support local? I might be biased because I work there but @vdeclutte.r is such a great thrift store in general. It’s for everyone — you’ll find gems as well as your casual pieces you might need. They create space for creatives and everyone just feels at home once they step in.
☕🍃 Marley Coffee
Based in Obs, Lower Main — this coffee shop is literally my go to; I recommend it to everyone. I’m a coffee lover and they already know my usual (a mocha). The atmosphere is so calming, usually with some reggae in the background, some incense burning and people just chilling and conversating. You could probably have a smoke and make new friends with anyone there. If you’re lucky, someone will be playing a guitar and singing a beautiful song. I swear there’s no better way to start a work day.
🌠 Stargazing
There’s nothing that can quite bring you down to earth & make you understand how amazing the universe is — and how small we are. A beautiful friend told me, he loves stargazing because no matter what happens, no matter where he is, no matter what shitty situation he’s in, the sky will always be there, everywhere he is.
📚 The Alchemist, by Paulo Coelho
My favourite book ever — I’ve read it more than 4 times I’m sure. This book changed my life! I’m a really spiritual person (emphasis on spiritual and not religious). The Alchemist was a small part of my awakening and changed my perspective on life. From there, everything changed. I definitely encourage everyone to read this book, and even if you don’t like it, I’m sure it’ll leave you with something you need.
🍱 Sushi & nachos
Since I’m usually in Obs everyday, I love having supper with friends/colleagues once in a while (which is like every other day). Grabbing sushi from Mr Lin, or some nachos from Trenchtown, is usually a go to. And those nachos after you’ve just 🍃 is literally bomb.
Some self promo and I’m not ashamed of it. I’ve recently started a collective with one of my closest homies @thugg.liberated. We’ve just had our first event on Friday and needless to say, it was so great. Why 77eightfive? We come from the hood and that’s our postal code, it’s the place that made us, that motivates us to be greater, kind of in an ironic way because we’re tryna get out of there. We’ve noticed a gap, and we will be creating spaces for creatives to be creative, freely. As well as providing a platform for creatives who don’t really have the support, knowledge or access to certain things. So give us a follow and tag along for the journey.
