#22: Azukile Patuleni (SNIFF)
This week we are joined by multidisciplinary artist, Azukile Patuleni, who tells us more about his art collective 'SNIFF', Holy Mountain (1973), Friendly SA, and more!
Azukile Patuleni is a multidisciplinary artist based in Cape Town but raised in Eastern Cape. He moved to Cape Town in 2008 and studied visual communication at the Academy of Digital Art in 2020. He is now basically on that journey of figuring shit – out while appreciating every bit of this b*tch called life.
We welcome him to The FRM Newsletter to share what he’s been into recently.
🐐🥇 Fashion
I have weird relationship with fashion at the moment, but I will still throw a big s/o to the OG Samuel Ross. Big respect for this man, he continues to play a massive role in the design space. Another s/o to the brothers in JHB, @friendly.sa – they’re dropping amazing items, so definitely check it out.
🥦💚 We Café
Eat healthy food and drink water before chasing the bag come on!!! If you’re in CPT, I highly recommend this spot, We Café, a new restaurant in Church Street. It has a unique twist with things like vegan burgers, pancakes and speciality teas (oh my god they serve the best tea – all naturally sweetened).
If someone out there is thinking of spoiling me, let's go out to We Café lmao.
🎧🌀 Music
I listen to anything that is terribly good. Lately I've been listening to Akai Solo on my way to work. His lines are just what I need to hear in the morning; they hit you with the force of a punch to wake you up and feel, think and move like a samurai warrior lmao. I will list few cuts from the record ‘Ride Solo, Fly Together’:
1. Akai Solo – Stand Alone Calm
2. Akai Solo – Never Neglect Instincts
3. Akai Solo – Kizuna Pt.2 (on this cut he's just coming at you and letting shit out of his chest and close the track noicely with this one line "cozy in my skin like the whole team")
🎥🍿 Film
If you haven't seen ‘The Holy Mountain’ (1973) film by Alejandro Jodorowsky, then go watch that shit. This man is such a legend on so many levels. The film is absolutely terribly phenomenal in my opinion. My favourite aspects of the film include its the absurdity, weirdness and interesting imagery. NIGGA WATCH THIS WITH YOUR MOM OR GIRL/BOY.
🎨👃 Check out SNIFF on First Thursdays
SNIFF is an art collective made up of 5 close friends who prioritise collaboration and making art with complete freedom, as well as an emphasis on fun and interactive experiences. Recently, SNIFF has become synonymous with audience interaction through something we independently provide every First Thursday – which is essentially a wall outside of a building in Bree Street. We cover the wall with blank papers in order to provide a space for the general public to interact with other human beings and make art through the environment. If you’re looking for weird shit to do next month, catch us at 155 Bree Street sniffing strangers armpits while they do smexy drawings.
