#20: Sanam (Glock Angel)
For our 20th newsletter, we are joined by the one and only Sanam, aka. DJ Glock Angel, who tells us more about low rise, activating your Bella Hadid era, "pretty girls like trap music", and more!
Sanam, aka Glock Angel, is a multidisciplinary Cape Town-based DJ and creative. She’s played for several events in and around Cape Town, also having expanded her sounds to Johannesburg and Durban. She’s also an engineering & built environment graduate, now completing her honours degree. At the heart of Sanam’s passions and life purposes is doing “hot girl shit” and having “Soulja Boy energy” – with a strong belief that life is about feeling delusionally and unstoppably hot.
We welcome her to The FRM Newsletter to share what she’s been into recently.
💋👖 Low rise
Personally, I prayed that low rise would never come back and now it’s what I live by. Low rise and a cute crop? Literally a uniform at this point. Also, skirts should be the size of a belt. If the girlies are gonna do Y2K we’re going tf in!
😎🚴♀️ Polarised sporty sunglasses
Naurrr but these eat. My confidence in a pair of these retro Y2K cyber aesthetic sunnies with my hair pulled back into an updo? Unmatched. It’s a small accessory that can elevate the entire outfit’s look, 10/10.
🔊👠 Pretty Girls Like Trap Music
Ok yes 2 Chainz reference because he was a big inspiration for me growing up but truly, pretty girls like trap music. I mean, even though I enjoy playing other genres and diversifying, it always comes back to trap as the homebase. Trap, rap, or anything like it, it’s truly for pretty girls. Also, free YSL!
🧝🏽♀️🥾 A Bella Hadid era
This is something I’ve decided for myself lol. We’re currently witnessing the rise of this decade’s supermodel and I think we should all be our own Bella Hadids, someone we see as unbelievably beautiful and kind. So yeah, get up and answer that phone call like there’s papz on you.
Lately I’ve spent a lot of time on NTS and actually listening to my own mixes, which is something I feel like I don’t do enough once they’re released. There’s this show on NTS from DJ duo A.G & Manara called “Beauty Blender”, in which they fuse South African amapiano and gqom with South Asian Hindi classics. So crazy and the production is top notch, big yes to this.
⚖️🧠 Balancing a Creative-STEM Lifestyle
Listen, I get it’s not for everyone. But for people like me, it’s kind of fun to live the Hannah Montana lifestyle. Maybe it’s the Gemini in me.
💅💄 Bleached brows on brown skin
Someone needs to talk me out of this. Because I’m so serious about it and I don’t trust that I can bleach them myself. The brown skin babes have been killing this look and I love to see BIPOC winning so yes, dooo it.
👩🎤❤️🔥 Uncle Waffles
I was going to speak specifically on her Boiler Room set from a few months ago, but tbh she’s a recommendation on her own. I love watching her rise to stardom (if she hasn’t already reached that level) and there’s definitely a level of inspiration I think most of us that are femme DJs have drawn from her.
🎧💰 Gigging
I think this speaks mostly to femme/queer DJs in our industry but please, GET YOUR NAME OUT THERE. If you love playing, play for radio shows, different venues, events, bars. Don’t let people who’ve been in this industry for longer demoralise you and confine you to a box, you’re better than that.
♑️🎙 CAPRISONGS
This really needed its own point because it’s been my album of the year. One thing about Twigs, the girl never disappoints. Ride the Dragon, Oh My Love, Lightbeamers. Definitely an album worth trying. Honourary mentions include the new Blood Orange and Yeat albums.
