#15: DJ HOT ATHENA (Bad Girls Club)
President of Bad Girls Club, DJ HOT ATHENA, checks in to tell us about Dischem Lip Therapy, music that oozes "dumb girl" energy, her next Bad Girls event this Friday! And more.
Savon Matjane, aka DJ HOT ATHENA, is a JHB-based DJ curating her own queer-focused alternative and experimental music events & radio shows, called ‘Bad Girls Club’. I’d say she’s the type to double-park two margaritas, with a cig in her mouth, wearing the thickest pink platforms you’ve ever seen. It’s like an eclectic-yet-chaotic mix of Barbie slash Olsen twins – and her next soirée is taking place this week Friday so make sure to cop your tickets!
We welcome her to The FRM Newsletter to share what she’s been into recently!
A show I've been watching recently that I think is insanely hilarious... even genius. It's executive produced by Nathan Fielder, whose show ‘Nathan For You’ is also just such a smash hit. Just the way ‘How To with John Wilson’ is written – you can really tell he had a hand in it. For those of us who struggle to do things in general I think it's a massive help.
🧏♀️💋 Music that oozes "Dumb Girl" energy
I love music that just radiates dumb girl energy and I would recommend everyone incorporate a healthy dose of it into their life. I think the consumption of this kind of art has so many benefits with regard to cardio (shaking ass), strengthening empathy (the consumption of unhinged and sometimes confusing lyrics) and is surely stimulating the right brain. My recs with regard to this holy meditation music would be what I've been listening to a lot as of right now.. Girls Rituals (albums: Redishness & Crap Shit) and Only Fire.
👩🍳🚫 Leaving cooking to the pros
I would never wish a full sink of dirty dishes onto my worst enemy. I’m a great cook and I love cooking – but as a day to day thing it's so exhausting. It's so fun and special when it's saved for an occasion. Like a special dinner. Also, meal prep is tedious. I will never be as good of a chef as the chef from my favourite restaurant and there’s a pretty good chance you won’t either. Maybe I say this as a woman but, I really recommend removing the stigma around barely cooking. For my sake, at least.
👡🛐 Platform shoes
The higher the platform, the closer to god.
🥦⬆️ Vegging Up
It's like nobody wants to get up and eat their vegetables these days ?! A lil broccoli never killed anyone. Let's strive for 5 a day, besties.
🧴🌞 Sunscreen
It’s so important. Not just so you can look sexier for even longer, but this new sun is truly working overtime (climate change and the ozone layer). Yes, even if you're black. The new sun doesn't see race and doesn't care if you're green, purple or blue.
🏳️🌈🎊 Bad Girls Club
Of course I would 1 million out of 10 recommend Bad Girls Club. It was originally created as a response to the amount of femicide and gender-based violence, as well as to break up the market of parasitic “faux-safe” spaces in Johannesburg. But it’s also about hearing really good music while you're out. I know taste is relative but, good through the lens of most of my Gen Z counterparts for sure. Death to boring music at groove – I think we have all had enough. Death to bobbing your head just because you're already drunk and you're already outside so whatever, or too tipsy to care that you don't even like the music. Let's have fun for real. It's fun, it's flirty and it's on the 29th of July.
🙏❤️ Gratitude
Your therapist asked me to remind you to think of 5 things you're grateful for before you go to bed, sweetie.
👄🫰 Dischem Lip Therapy
It’s gonna take a real contender to go up against Vaseline and this is indeed a real one.
🍭🚨 Keeping an emergency sweet in your bag
You will need it eventually. Even better if it's a mint.
