#100: FRM editors recs
We're joined by our editor-in-chief, Odwa, who tells us more about the return of Oasis, (finally) reaching 100 FRM Newsletters!, vodka, Mfana Touchline's music, Naruto Shippuden, and more.
Just like that—we reach 100 FRM Newsletters! And what better way to enter this New century of FRM tastemaking recs than how it all began on our Substack three and a half years ago… with some good old FRM editors recs. Thank you to those of you who are returning—and to those who are New—welcome.
Curated by myself, this fashion-based newsletter invites trendy local creative personalities to—as Andy Warhol would say—relish within their “15-minutes of fame” by sharing their personal fashion, music, art, film, books, food, travel & lifestyle tips with our audience. Without further ado, let me share what I’ve been into recently!
☘️🍺 Aloysius "Alo" Creevey (Skins season 5 & 6)
I am basically Alo. In sooo many Different ways. Skins season 5 & 6 are super underrated for me. The Rich and Alo friendship arc is everything to me.
🌊🎸 Oasis RETURNS
On July 11 2023, I tweeted that there shall be no world peace granted until Oasis gets back together. Today we live the reality of the best band in the world reunited as brothers. Now let’s aim for WORLD PEACE.
🥶⚽️ Cole Palmer
I (almost) vowed to Myself that I would not talk football on these Newsletters but forgive me I cannot hold it in. I am the biggest Chelsea football club supporter as well as the biggest Cole Palmer fan in the world. Best footballer in the world by a mile if you Ask me. #biased
🍸👯♀️ Smirnoff 1818 Vodka
Been receiving quite a bit of flack and pushback from close mates on This one. And its genuinely making me question us as FUN people lol! Staying in Cape Town for the past few Months reminded me that vodka + cranberry will always be iconic (therefore 1818 is somewhat legacy).
🇿🇦💿 Mzansiwikipedia
One of my favourite Instagram pages right Now. Pure vintage 2000s South Africa. Post-democracy Pop culture reflected. I saw a photo of HHP driving a Suzuki late 2000s tweeting from his Blackberry and thought wow. I just love being South African.
🎧 What I’m currently Listening to…
I’ve kinda been living outside of a suitcase for the Last few months so I have been leaning a lot on my Music sensibilities to get me through my days. Currently on rotation is a whole lot of Mfana Touchline music, Car Seat Headrest—Twin Fantasy, Travis Scott’s Jackboys 2 (listening to ‘Kick Out’ as I type this!), Bassvictim’s basspunk 1 & 2, Beck (his ‘Loser’ era), everything by The Hellp.

🕸🧑💻 Blogs
Nina Protocol & Silknode are the two Blogs doing it for me right Now. Nina Protocol is like peak early-Pitchfork days before the publication went corporate—when you had to read the Album reviews on the .com. Authentic algorithm when you can Discover some compelling underground music. I particularly love their shoegaze curation; that’s how I discovered untitled (halo)’s music (they’re incredible btw). Silknode is more Tumblr-esque photo blogging.
🇯🇵🗡 Naruto Shippuden
I finished Bleach a month ago and went straight back to finishing Naruto Shippuden. Still Goes down as my favourite anime of all time. From a Birth chart perspective, I would definitely categorise myself as a Naruto (Sun & Moon), with a Master Jiraiya (Rising).
🥟😁 Chinese Food (Dumplings)
Been my favourite thing to eat over the past few Months, especially here in Joburg. I enjoy Chow faan here and There as well.
📔📽 Looking for Alaska (2019) (created by Josh Schwartz)
This lineup sounded like a dream to me the first time I watched it last year. John Green, one of my favourite authors, paired with Josh Schwartz, one of my favourite screenwriters & producers. I read Looking for Alaska when I was in university & As much as I haven’t yet finished this tv series adaptation, I am already enjoying the congruency between both interpretations.
